US Letter, 8.5 x 11 inches. Print at 100% for craft pieces; use Fit to page if your printer clips the margins. An adult should help with scissors and fitting wearable crafts.
Build a turkey name craft by placing the letters of a child’s name across the tail feathers. The activity combines name recognition, letter order and a seasonal paper craft. A short name can use wide spacing, while a longer name can continue onto extra feathers. The important part is reading the name in order, not forcing every child into the same number of pieces.
How to use this printable
- Write the child’s preferred name on a separate card to use as a reference. Count the letters together and plan one letter for each feather.
- Color the turkey body and feathers. Before cutting, write the letters large enough to see from a short distance.
- Arrange the feathers in reading order behind the body without glue. Point to each letter while saying the name slowly.
- Glue the arrangement, add the face and feet, and read the name again. Write the complete name below the turkey if you want a second reading reference.
Make the activity your own
For early learners, focus on the first letter and let an adult write the remaining letters for tracing. Children with longer names can overlap feathers slightly or make a larger tail using additional paper. A classroom display can be sorted by first letter, but keep the child’s own spelling and capitalization. Invite children to compare shared letters without suggesting one name is better because it is shorter or easier to write.
Printing and questions
Print the PDF on US Letter paper in portrait orientation. Start with one copy and check the preview before making a classroom set. Use ordinary paper for a worksheet, or cardstock when the finished piece needs to stand up to handling.
What if the name has more letters than the feather spaces?
Add extra paper feathers or use a second row. Do not remove letters to make the name fit.
Can this work with a surname or a thankful word?
Yes. Choose a word that fits the learner’s writing level and check its spelling before gluing.
