A paper bag turkey craft turns a simple lunch bag into a character children can use for a short story. The folded bottom of the bag becomes the puppet’s face, while the bag itself forms the body. Add a paper feather fan behind it and use the finished puppet to practice speaking, sequencing, or asking a partner a friendly question.
Check how the bag moves
Lay the bag flat with the folded bottom facing up. Slide a hand inside and gently open the fold to see where the puppet’s mouth will move. Mark the eye position above that opening. Keep the beak and any hanging details clear of the fold so the face can still move after assembly. Color the printable pieces before cutting them apart.
Attach the feather fan behind the bag
Arrange broad paper feathers on a backing shape, then glue their lower ends together. Attach the fan to the back of the bag near the upper body. Check that the puppet remains comfortable to hold and that feathers do not bend over the face. Add eyes, a beak, and a small wattle shape to the folded section. Let glue dry before opening and closing the puppet repeatedly.
Give the turkey a speaking role
Ask the child to introduce the puppet with a name and one favorite activity. A partner can ask where the turkey is going or what it carries in a pretend backpack. Build a three-part story together: the turkey has a problem, asks for help, and tries a solution. Children can perform from behind a table or simply hold the puppet while speaking from their seats.
Frequently asked questions
What if our bag is a different size?
Hold the paper pieces against the actual bag before gluing. Trim or redraw broad shapes as needed, keeping the mouth fold free to move and the face easy to see.
Can we make the craft without a puppet opening?
Yes. Stuff the bag lightly with clean scrap paper and fold the top closed to create a standing decoration. Keep it paper-based and add a name card or short message.
