Review addition and subtraction with a manageable Thanksgiving practice page. The questions move between number sentences and short gathering stories so students practice both calculating and deciding what a situation asks. Some problems cross a ten, making the worksheet useful for discussing place value and decomposing numbers. Students can use drawings or a number line whenever they need a visible model.
How to use this printable
- Complete the first two number sentences together. Ask which numbers can be combined to make a ten before adding the rest.
- Read each word problem and say whether the amount grows, shrinks or is being compared. Write an equation before calculating.
- Solve in pencil and keep units beside story answers. Use tens-and-ones drawings when a regrouping step feels unclear.
- Check one answer with the inverse operation. For example, add the amount taken away back to a subtraction answer to recover the starting total.
Make the activity your own
A short page is most useful when it leads to an explanation. Ask a student to choose the problem that was easiest and describe why. Then choose one that needed a different strategy. For extra practice, children can write a matching story for one bare number sentence and exchange it with a partner. Keep the task focused by using only one or two strategies at a time.
Printing and questions
Print the PDF on US Letter paper in portrait orientation. Start with one copy and check the preview before making a classroom set. Use ordinary paper for a worksheet, or cardstock when the finished piece needs to stand up to handling.
Are the problems all within 20?
No. This version includes two-digit totals and differences, so check the numbers before assigning it to a beginning learner.
Can I split the worksheet across two days?
Yes. Complete four or five questions at a time and use the remaining questions for a later review.
