A turkey mask can turn a short craft session into a storytelling activity. Children color the face, add their own expression, and use the finished mask to speak as an imaginary turkey. Keep the construction comfortable and simple. A handheld mask is often easier to manage than a tied mask during a busy classroom or family gathering.
What to make
Print the face on cardstock when possible, then check its size against the child’s face before making any eye openings. The openings should allow a clear view without forcing the mask close to the eyes. An adult should handle interior cuts. The mask is a pretend-play prop, not protective equipment, and it should come off whenever the child wants.
How to use this printable
- Color the turkey face while the sheet is still whole, leaving the cutting lines visible around the outside edge.
- Have an adult cut the outer shape and test the eye positions before carefully opening the marked viewing areas.
- Attach a broad paper handle to one side for a handheld version, or use a comfortable band after checking the fit.
- Try the mask while standing still, then use it for a short spoken line or seated puppet-style conversation.
Make the activity your own
Invite children to introduce their turkey with a name, a favorite place to rest, and one thing it wants to say. A class can create a short scene in which several birds solve a problem together. Avoid running or climbing while wearing the mask. If any part feels uncomfortable or blocks vision, switch to a handheld prop or attach the face to a paper bag puppet instead.
Questions before you begin
Can young children cut the eye holes themselves?
An adult should handle interior cuts. Children can still color, choose the expression, and help attach the handle.
What if the mask does not fit?
Adjust the print size and test a paper copy before using cardstock. A handheld version also gives more flexibility.
